March on the Emerald Coast is something special. The Gulf of Mexico is warming back up. The sugar-white sand feels warm under bare feet again after a mild Florida winter. Spring Break families are rolling in from across the South and Midwest, and the stretch of US-98 from Fort Walton Beach through Destin and into Miramar Beach is buzzing with the particular energy that only happens when the weather is perfect and everyone is somewhere they want to be.
But March here is more than just beach days. It is one of the most event-packed months on the calendar, with food festivals, performing arts, live music, family-friendly science experiences, and community celebrations filling nearly every weekend. Whether you are here for a full two-week Spring Break, a long weekend escape, or a quiet early-March getaway before the crowds peak, there is something happening that deserves a spot in your plans.

Fat Tuesday lands on March 3rd in 2026, and HarborWalk Village celebrates in style with its annual Mardi Gras Parade on Sunday, March 1st. The free event transforms the Destin Harbor boardwalk into a Gulf Coast version of Bourbon Street, with colorful floats rolling through the village, beads flying from every direction, and live music on the main stage. Local restaurants set the scene with Cajun-inspired specials, and the energy carries well into the evening. Free to attend, open to all ages, and impossible to miss if you are staying anywhere near the harbor.

The Emerald Coast Science Center runs its Discover Science Saturday program on the first Saturday of each month, and March 7th falls right at the start of early Spring Break travel. These drop-in, hands-on STEM sessions are designed for families with children and cover a rotating range of topics from chemistry and physics to robotics and natural science using the center’s interactive exhibits. The Science Center’s two-acre property also features live animals including alligators, a manatee, bobcats, and flamingos, making it a genuinely full-morning destination for curious kids of any age.

The Mattie Kelly Arts Center’s 2025-2026 season closes out its blockbuster run with Dirty Dancing in Concert on March 10th. This immersive live concert experience features a full live band performing the iconic soundtrack from the classic film while the movie plays on a giant screen. From “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” to “Hungry Eyes” and “Do You Love Me,” the music is performed live as the scenes unfold, creating a uniquely electric atmosphere that is part concert, part movie night, and all nostalgia. Tickets available at MattieKellyArtsCenter.org by calling 850-729-6000.

The Mac and Cheese Festival at Destin Commons has become one of the most anticipated food events on the Emerald Coast, and the 7th annual edition on March 15th looks to be the biggest yet. Local restaurants compete for the title of Best Mac in Town, serving up gourmet and creative twists on the beloved comfort food while attendees cast votes for their favorites. All proceeds benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Emerald Coast. General admission tickets are available in advance, and the VIC upgrade (Very Important Cheese) includes a complimentary beverage and event t-shirt.

Spring Break and exotic animals make a perfect pairing, and the Emerald Coast Science Center’s Animal Tales show on March 20th delivers exactly that. Expert presenters bring a remarkable lineup of animals for up-close interactive presentations, including a kinkajou, tegu lizard, kookaburra, fruit bat, rainbow boa, and tarantula. After each presentation, guests get to touch and interact with the animals. Space is strictly limited and tickets sell out early, so advance registration is strongly recommended. Ticket price includes the Animal Tales show plus general Science Center admission.

Just a short drive from Destin along the Emerald Coast, the 7th Annual International Festival in Downtown Fort Walton Beach is one of the region’s most vibrant and genuinely moving community events. This year’s theme aligns with Okaloosa County’s celebration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, making the multicultural celebration especially resonant. Representatives from more than 60 nations bring traditional food, music, dance, art, and cultural exhibits to the street festival. Admission is free and open to all.

HarborWalk Village on the Destin Harbor is the social heartbeat of the Emerald Coast in March, and the weekly Coastal Country Concert series running every Friday and Saturday evening is where locals and visitors come together on the waterfront. Live regional country, rock, and coastal pop acts perform on the main stage with the harbor and charter fishing fleet as a backdrop. Free to attend. Arrive early on Spring Break weekends for a good spot.

The Saturday Farmers Market at Grand Boulevard is one of the most consistent and beloved community gatherings in Miramar Beach. Every Saturday morning, local vendors set up alongside the fountains and outdoor plaza at Grand Boulevard at Sandestin, offering fresh produce, baked goods, local honey, handmade crafts, flowers, and prepared foods. Free to attend. March is one of the best months to go, with moderate temperatures and peak vendor turnout as the season picks up.

It would be doing this newsletter a disservice to talk about March in Destin without acknowledging the thing that makes this month what it is: the beach. March is when the Gulf comes back to life on the Emerald Coast. Water temperatures climb back into the mid-60s and push toward 70 degrees by month’s end. The crystal-green water that gives this stretch of coastline its name is at its most vivid in March sunlight, and the sugar-white quartz sand along Henderson Beach State Park, Crystal Beach, and the Miramar Beach shoreline is as pristine as it gets.
March in Destin moves fast. Spring Break weeks fill up months in advance, and even the shoulder weekends in early and late March are drawing more visitors every year as travelers discover what regulars have known for decades: this is the best time to be on the Emerald Coast.
